Construction of this governmental building began in 1883 under architect Antoine-Georges Louvier and concluded in 1890, replacing the former prefecture at Place des Jacobins.
The building houses both the State Prefecture services and the Rhône Departmental Council, representing local administration and territorial governance in Lyon.
Visitors can explore the interior spaces during Heritage Days in September, when the administrative sections and historical salons open to the public.
French President Sadi Carnot met his end at this location on June 25, 1894, leading to the renaming of the Yellow Salon to Salon Carnot.
