Salle Le Peletier, theatre of the Paris Opera from 1821 to 1873

Salle Le Peletier was an opera house located on Rue Le Peletier in Paris, hosting opera and ballet performances from the mid-1800s until its destruction in 1873. The building served as a major venue for classical music and dance productions throughout its existence.

Salle Le Peletier was founded in the mid-1800s and became Paris's principal opera stage of its era. The building was destroyed by fire in 1873, which prompted the construction of the new Opéra Garnier.

The venue was long the heart of Paris's musical life, drawing composers, performers, and educated audiences who shaped the city's artistic taste. The performances staged here became the standard by which other musical events were measured.

Since the building no longer exists, visitors can explore the location today by walking through the 9th arrondissement and discovering its history through street names and historical markers. The area is easily accessible by public transportation and invites a cultural walking tour.

The 1873 opera fire was so dramatic that it reshaped Paris's cultural policies and forced the construction of a larger, more modern theater. This fire marked the end of one era and the beginning of the grand Opéra Garnier.
