Mines de Batère, Iron mining complex in Corsavy, France
The Mines de Batère extend between 1200 and 1600 meters altitude in the Canigou massif of the Eastern Pyrenees mountains.
The mining operations started in the 2nd century BC and continued until 1987, marking over two millennia of iron extraction in this region.
A mining community developed on site at 1450 meters altitude, complete with a canteen, offices, workshops, and supply store for workers.
The former mining buildings now serve as a mountain refuge, offering exhibitions about the mining history during the seasonal opening periods.
The site features specific mineral compositions including calcite, hematite, dolomite, and pyrite extracted through both open-pit and gallery methods.
