Pic de l'Estelle, Mountain summit in Pyrénées-Orientales, France.
Pic de l'Estelle is a 1,782-meter (5,846 feet) mountain located on the eastern slopes of the Canigou range in Pyrénées-Orientales. The summit offers expansive views across the surrounding peaks and valleys below.
Mining shaped the area, particularly the Pinosa site on the northern slopes which extracted minerals from the mountain for centuries. This industrial activity influenced the development of surrounding settlements.
The peak sits at the boundary between three historical regions, and this position has shaped how people settled and built communities in the foothills. You can observe regional differences in construction styles and land use as you move across the slopes.
The trail is well-marked but steep, especially higher up, so solid hiking boots and good fitness are needed. Start early to have plenty of daylight, and bring water and snacks since there are no facilities along the way.
The mountain is made of diorite rock from the Batère pluton, a geological formation created hundreds of millions of years ago. Hikers who pay attention can see different rock types and colors exposed along the slopes.
