Musée Courbet

Musée Courbet is housed in a building on Place Robert Fernier in Ornans and displays approximately 80 original paintings across two floors. The collection documents the artist's career, from his early works to his mature paintings created later in life.

The museum opened in 2010 to honor a painter of the 1800s who transformed art by showing real people and landscapes instead of idealized scenes. His approach challenged the artistic traditions of his era and influenced how painters thought about their subjects.

The collection features works by a painter who depicted ordinary people and landscapes, giving them the same importance as grand historical subjects once held in art. The surrounding town and countryside still look much as they appear in his paintings, making the place feel connected to his artistic vision.

The museum opens Monday afternoon through Sunday, with longer hours from June to September, and offers guided tours as well as workshops. Planning a visit in winter is wise, as opening times are reduced during colder months.

The museum sits in the artist's birthplace, so many of the valleys, streams, and buildings he painted can still be seen in the landscape outside. Visitors can walk through the same surroundings that appear in the paintings on display.
