Musée Gustave Courbet, Art museum and birth house in Ornans, France

The Gustave Courbet Museum occupies several connected historic buildings and displays around 80 permanent works across different exhibition spaces. The collections include paintings, drawings, and sculptures by the artist along with works from his contemporaries working in the Realism style.

The museum began in 1947 with five paintings displayed in the town hall before moving to its current location in the Hôtel Hébert, a 16th-century building. This relocation allowed for a larger collection to be shown and brought the artist's story closer to his home region.

The works displayed reflect how Courbet saw his hometown and the people living there, showing the importance of the Realism movement to local identity. The paintings reveal connections between the artist's vision and the region he depicted throughout his career.

The museum is located in town and easy to find, with guided tours and educational activities available for visitors of all ages. The exhibition spaces spread across multiple floors, so plan to spend enough time exploring the different areas.

The museum has partnered with the Musée d'Orsay since 2014, allowing for regular artwork loans and collaborative research. This partnership helps place Courbet's works within an international context and deepens understanding of his significance.

The most beautiful hidden spots of Burgundy-Franche-Comté

Burgundy-Franche-Comté encompasses a varied heritage that spans several millennia. The region houses prehistoric sites such as the Roche de Solutré, monasteries founded as early as the 6th century like Baume Abbey, as well as medieval fortresses and Renaissance homes. Natural formations include the Osselle Cave, open to the public since 1751, and the Hérisson Waterfall, which features seven cascades over nearly 2.5 miles in the Jura mountains. The area is characterized by diverse terrain, from vineyards and mountain foothills to valleys and limestone plateaus. Visitors can explore the Cormatin Castle with its formal gardens, observe the ongoing construction of Guédelon Castle using 13th-century techniques, or explore the underground galleries of the Osselle Cave. These sites attest to human habitation and geological changes over the centuries.
