Musée Gustave Courbet

The Gustave Courbet Museum occupies several connected historic buildings and displays around 80 permanent works across different exhibition spaces. The collections include paintings, drawings, and sculptures by the artist along with works from his contemporaries working in the Realism style.

The museum began in 1947 with five paintings displayed in the town hall before moving to its current location in the Hôtel Hébert, a 16th-century building. This relocation allowed for a larger collection to be shown and brought the artist's story closer to his home region.

The works displayed reflect how Courbet saw his hometown and the people living there, showing the importance of the Realism movement to local identity. The paintings reveal connections between the artist's vision and the region he depicted throughout his career.
