Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château d'Ultrère

Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château d'Ultrère is a small mountain chapel situated on a high ridge near Sorède in the Pyrenees. The interior houses a decorative baroque altar and an ancient statue of the Virgin Mary, which form the spiritual heart of the building.

The chapel was built in the 1680s following destruction of a nearby fortress in the previous decade. Its construction at this location continued a long-standing religious significance for the mountain region.

The chapel draws pilgrims who undertake the journey to this isolated place of worship high in the mountains. Its interior reflects the religious traditions of the region through carefully crafted sacred objects and regular use for prayer.

Access is via a marked hiking trail that requires several hours of walking with steep sections throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for changing weather conditions at altitude.

The building suffered severe damage from a major fire but was subsequently restored to its original condition. This reconstruction work preserved the historical artworks for future generations to see.
