The Valley of Turtles

The Valley of Turtles is a zoo in Sorède dedicated to raising and displaying turtles and tortoises from around the world. The site houses more than 300 animals representing about 50 different species in large enclosures with rocks, plants, and water features that recreate their wild environments.

The zoo was founded to protect endangered turtle species and teach visitors about reptile diversity and behavior. It grew into a specialized center focused on maintaining populations of animals that are disappearing in the wild.

The sanctuary displays different turtle species in settings that mimic their natural homes, allowing visitors to observe animals in enclosures with Mediterranean plants and rocky terrain. These everyday views help people understand how these creatures actually live and what they need to survive.

The zoo operates from March through November, with longer hours during the warm months and shorter ones during cooler periods. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to walk between the enclosures, as the facility spreads across several hillsides and pathways.

The zoo offers a program where visitors work alongside keepers and feed giant Seychelles tortoises that weigh hundreds of kilograms. This direct encounter with some of the largest living turtle species is an unforgettable experience that most visitors do not anticipate.
