Puig Neulós, Mountain summit at French-Spanish border, France and Spain
Puig Neulós is a mountain summit on the French-Spanish border that rises to around 1,257 meters (4,125 feet) elevation. Its rocky surface is composed of crystalline schist, slate, and phyllite that give the peak a rough, dark appearance.
The peak's name appears in 1322 documents as Podio Nebuloso, derived from Latin words describing a rounded summit often shrouded in clouds. Its border location made it a significant passage point for people traveling between the two countries over the centuries.
The mountain holds stories of people who crossed its heights for centuries. A shepherd named Emmanuel Coste built La Reyne de las Founs, a rock formation by a water source that smugglers once used to leave coded messages for each other.
Reaching the summit requires good physical fitness and sturdy boots due to steep terrain and rocky surfaces. Several marked hiking routes approach from different directions with yellow paint blazes making the trails easy to follow.
Military antennas sit on the French slope of the mountain, visible only from that side and marking its strategic importance. The area falls within a protected nature reserve that safeguards the wildlife and plant life of the Pyrenean region.
