Réserve naturelle nationale de l'île du Rohrschollen, National nature reserve in Strasbourg, France.
Rohrschollen Island Reserve is a protected natural area on an island in the Rhine River near Strasbourg. The site contains forest, meadow and water habitats that support diverse plant and animal life.
The island formed between 1959 and 1963 during Rhine River channelization work that reshaped the waterway. This engineering project separated the area from the Neuhof forest and created a new natural space.
The name reflects German roots, combining words for reeds and elevated ground that match what you see in the landscape today. Walking through the reserve, the mix of water, meadow and forest shows how this place earned its name.
You can walk through the reserve on marked trails that are open year-round for visitor exploration. Wear comfortable footwear and be aware of seasonal conditions, especially during wet weather or high water periods.
The reserve contains an alluvial forest type similar to those found in the Danube valley, supporting specialized plant species. This uncommon forest ecosystem gives a glimpse into habitats that are rare elsewhere in the region.
