Île aux Épis, River island in Port du Rhin district, Strasbourg, France
The island extends between the Rhine River on the east side and the Vauban and René Graff basins on the western edge.
At the end of the 18th century, this neutral border zone hosted the ceremonial handover of Marie-Antoinette on May 7, 1770.
The southern section includes social housing developments and the Garden of Two Rivers, connecting French and German territories across the Rhine.
Multiple industrial facilities occupy the northern half, including a malting plant, steel mill, and cement factory with container barge operations.
The island features numerous submerged groynes perpendicular to the river flow, constructed to reduce the Rhine's water speed.
