Parc de la Citadelle, Urban park in Strasbourg, France
Parc de la Citadelle is an urban green space in Strasbourg built on the grounds of a former military fortress covering about 11 hectares. Winding pathways run alongside water-filled moats and through garden areas shaded by mature trees.
The fortress at this location was built in 1681 by the military engineer Vauban to defend the city. It was destroyed during the 1870 siege of Strasbourg, after which the grounds were transformed into a public park.
The park retains original fortress structures, including a sally gate and two bastions that reflect French military design from centuries past. These elements shape how visitors experience the landscape during their walks.
The park can be reached by tram C or E at Esplanade station, or by bus 30 at Ankara stop, with several entrances spread around the perimeter. Plan to spend time exploring the pathways at a leisurely pace, as the layout invites wandering and discovery.
The water-filled moats now host ducks and turtles that visitors can watch swimming and resting along the banks. A splash pad area provides children with a place to play and cool off during warm days.
