Tours de Castillon, Archaeological site in Paradou, France
Tours de Castillon is an archaeological site in Paradou that rises to 48 meters elevation overlooking the Baux marshlands. The location sits within the Regional Nature Park of Alpilles and shows the remains of an ancient settlement with traces of dwellings and fortifications.
Excavations between 1986 and 1990 uncovered an ancient oppidum and three medieval towers that marked the settlement boundaries. These discoveries show that people used and fortified this location over an extended period.
The site displays traces of different settlement phases from the Iron Age through the medieval period, visible in wall remains, storage structures, and water basins. These remnants tell the story of people who lived here across many centuries.
A hiking trail of about 5 kilometers connects the site with the surrounding area and can be completed in roughly two hours. The path passes by many different points and offers good opportunities to explore the landscape along the way.
A cemetery on the southeastern slope held five burials from the medieval period, including two men and one woman. These graves provide rare insights into the burial practices of that era.
