Saint Joseph's Church stands on a sandy coastal ridge with brick walls and a raised foundation of 80 centimeters in height.
Father Prosper Raffray initiated the construction in 1887, and the local community contributed materials, labor, and money to complete it by 1893.
The interior walls and ceiling contain 400 square meters of paintings by Pierre Huguet, executed between 1892 and 1898 during his penal colony sentence.
The building requires substantial renovation due to persistent humidity causing deterioration of foundations, plaster, and woodwork.
The church received national heritage status in 1978 and contains the largest collection of religious naive art in French Guiana.
