Maison-forte de Seix

Maison-forte de Seix is a fortified residential building with a quadrangular stone structure, corner towers at the northeast, northwest and southwest positions, and a staircase tower on the west side. Today it houses a visitor center for the Haut-Salat valleys offering guided tours and educational programs.

The building was constructed in the mid-16th century on earlier foundations and controlled a critical route between France and Spain. It served as one of two castles in medieval Seix.

The interior displays decorations from the 1800s, including stucco ornaments in the first-floor salon and carved stone reliefs at the entrance. These adornments reflect the tastes of that period.

The building sits on a slope with good views over the valley, so wear sturdy shoes and allow time for the stairs and paths. The visitor center operates year-round with guides and educational activities, though you should check ahead for specific opening details.

The walls are built from a mix of sandstone, pebbles, and crushed brick, an uncommon construction method for its time. This material blend gives the building a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other fortifications of the era.
