Grotte du Ker de Massat, Prehistoric cave in Massat, France.
The underground passages of Ker de Massat Cave extend through limestone formations, containing geological structures and subterranean water systems.
The cave received its historical monument classification in 1974, following numerous archaeological discoveries that revealed evidence of Magdalenian period human occupation.
The cave walls display Paleolithic engravings, discovered in 1957, which demonstrate the artistic practices of early human inhabitants in the region.
Access to the cave requires guided tours and remains closed between March 1st and September 30th to protect the resident bat colonies.
This site contributed to the establishment of prehistoric era classifications through paleontological studies conducted by Édouard Lartet in 1861.
