Château de la Garde

Château de la Garde is a medieval fortress in a Pyrenean valley that combines a rectangular enclosure with two round towers and a central square keep. The stonework forms a compact defensive structure built to withstand attack from multiple directions.

The fortress was built in the 12th century as a defensive stronghold below Mirabat Castle. It has been officially registered as a historical monument since 1996.

The fortress reflects how medieval communities organized their defense and protected their settlements in mountain valleys. It shows a way of life centered on security and control of the surrounding territory.

Visitors reach the fortress on foot via a marked trail, and it is essential to respect the private property boundaries around the site. Sturdy footwear and time for climbing are important, especially after rain when the path may be slippery.

The fortress sits at a vantage point that overlooks valleys and passes connecting to mountain crossings in the high Pyrenees. This position allowed defenders to monitor movement and control access through the surrounding terrain.
