Mghvimevi monastery, Orthodox monastery in Chiatura Municipality, Georgia

Mghvimevi monastery is a monastic complex built inside a natural cave along the Kvirila River, with two churches, a bell tower, and monks' living quarters. The buildings sit horizontally into the rock face, so the stone of the cliff and the walls of the structures flow into each other without a clear boundary.

The monastery was built in the 13th century, when builders turned existing caves into a place of worship. Its remote location made it a shelter for monks and local people during times of conflict.

The main church has carved stone details on its walls and a wooden iconostasis from the 18th century showing images of the monastery's founders. The frescoes inside tell stories of saints and are still the first thing visitors notice when they step in.

The path to the monastery runs along a narrow trail on the cliff face and can be steep and slippery in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The trail leads directly to the cave entrance, and the approach is part of what makes the visit worthwhile.

Archaeological digs near the monastery turned up prehistoric arrowheads and traces of ancient human occupation. This means people were already living in or using these caves long before any religious building was put up here.
