Mghvimevi monastery

Mghvimevi monastery is a monastic complex situated within a natural cave formation along the Kvirila River, comprising two churches, a bell tower, and monastic dwellings. The structures extend horizontally into the rock face, creating a unique arrangement where buildings and landscape merge into a single entity.

This monastery was built in the 13th century when builders skillfully transformed existing caves into a religious center. The remote location provided shelter during periods of conflict and made it an important refuge for monks and locals alike.

The main church displays carved stone details on its walls and houses a wooden iconostasis from the 18th century with images of the monastery's founders. The frescoes throughout the interior tell stories of saints and remain central to how visitors experience the space today.

The path to the monastery follows a narrow trail along the cliff face until it reaches the cave entrance. Sturdy footwear and some sure-footedness are helpful, as the trail is steep and can be slippery in places.

Archaeological excavations near the monastery uncovered prehistoric artifacts, including arrowheads and evidence of ancient human habitation. These discoveries reveal that people sought shelter in these caves long before the monastery was built.
