Ubisi monastery, Medieval monastic complex in Imereti, Georgia
Ubisi monastery is a medieval monastic complex in Imereti containing a ninth-century Church of Saint George, a four-story tower built in 1141, and remains of a defensive wall from the 12th century. The site sits at approximately 320 meters elevation and overlooks the Dzirula River gorge.
Saint Gregory of Khandzta established the monastery in the ninth century as a religious center overlooking the Dzirula River gorge. Over the centuries, the site expanded with additional structures including the prominent tower and fortification works that protected and organized the monastic community.
The interior walls display detailed frescoes from the 14th century showing biblical scenes and moments from Saint George's life, created by painters Gerasimo and Damiane. These artworks show the skill and faith of the monks who lived here.
The location is easily reached and sits about 25 kilometers from Kharagauli town, making it suitable for day trips. Visitors should prepare for varied terrain and weather conditions, as the complex stands on elevated land and is surrounded by walking paths.
The monastery originally held twelve significant icons now kept in the National Museum of Georgia in Tbilisi for safekeeping. This relocation reflects efforts to protect the artistic heritage from the effects of time and exposure.
