Reliquiensammlung von Vodnjan, Religious relics collection in Church of St. Blaise, Vodnjan, Croatia
The Relic Collection of Vodnjan is housed in former sacristy rooms of the Church of St. Blaise, one of the largest church buildings in Istria, and holds around 370 sacred objects connected to some 250 saints. The objects range from small fragments to fully preserved human remains, displayed across several rooms that open one into the next.
The Church of St. Blaise was begun in 1760 and finished around four decades later, funded by contributions from local residents. The relics themselves come from different periods and were gathered over many generations before being moved to the sacristy rooms that now form the collection.
The objects on display were brought to Vodnjan over the centuries by clergy and pilgrims from across Europe. Visitors who walk through the rooms today can see how each relic is carefully mounted or enclosed, reflecting the deep respect the local community has long shown toward these sacred objects.
The collection is most reliably open during summer, while a visit outside that period is best arranged in advance by contacting the church. The rooms are inside the church in the center of Vodnjan, easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the small town.
Several of the human remains on display are fully intact without any embalming or sealed containers, something that researchers have not been able to explain. The humid Adriatic climate makes this especially puzzling, since moisture would normally cause such remains to deteriorate quickly.
