Peroj, Settlement in Vodnjan municipality, Croatia.
Peroj is a coastal settlement in western Istria situated approximately one kilometer from the Adriatic Sea. The village is characterized by beaches and agricultural landscapes that define the everyday setting of this small community.
The settlement was known as Praetoriolum during Roman times and experienced a significant resettlement in 1657 when fifteen Montenegrin families established themselves there. This event shaped the demographic and cultural makeup of the place for generations to come.
The settlement holds three churches that reflect its religious diversity: the Church of St Stephen, the Church of St Fusca, and the Orthodox Church of St Spyridon. Visitors can observe how these religious buildings shape the character and communal life of this small coastal community.
The surrounding area offers numerous hiking and cycling paths that connect to various destinations. From here, visitors have convenient access to nearby attractions such as Fazana and Brijuni National Park, as well as to the city of Pula.
The descendants of thirteen original Montenegrin Orthodox families continue to preserve their own traditions within this Croatian coastal community. This continuity over more than 350 years makes the village a rare example of how identity persists across generations.
