Risnjak, Mountain summit in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia.
Risnjak is a mountain summit in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia, and the highest point of the national park that shares its name. Its slopes are mostly covered in dense forest, which gives way to rocky ground and low-growing plants closer to the top.
The area around the summit was declared a national park in 1949 after a professor advocated for its protection based on its ecological value. That decision set the foundation for the forests and wildlife that visitors can still encounter today.
The name Risnjak comes from the Croatian word for lynx, an animal that once roamed these forests in large numbers. Hikers walking through the beech and spruce woods today can still occasionally spot tracks or signs of these shy predators.
The most common starting point for the hike is Crni Lug village, where marked trails lead up toward the summit. Sturdy footwear and layers are a good idea, since conditions at this elevation can change quickly even on a clear day.
The summit sits at the exact meeting point of Mediterranean coastal air and continental inland weather, so plants from two very different climates grow side by side across its slopes. This overlap makes it one of the most species-rich mountains of its size anywhere in Croatia.
