Snježnik, Mountain peak in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia.
Snježnik is a limestone mountain summit in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia, rising above a landscape of rocky ridges and open alpine meadows. Its slopes combine patches of exposed rock with grassy areas that open up toward the top.
The passes around Snježnik served for centuries as crossing points between the interior of the continent and the Adriatic coast. Merchants and travelers used these routes regularly, which gave the mountain a role as a threshold between two very different worlds.
The name Snježnik simply means "snow mountain" in Croatian, a reference to the long-lasting snow cover that visitors can still see well into spring. Local hiking clubs are a regular presence on the trails, and their work keeping the paths in good condition is easy to notice.
Most trails start from Platak, and the route known as the Roman Path is the most direct way to reach the top. Good footwear and clothing suitable for changing weather are important, as conditions near the summit can shift quickly.
Despite sitting less than 12 miles (about 20 km) from the Adriatic coast, the summit keeps snow on the ground well into late spring. This unusual combination of cold air and coastal proximity allows plants like edelweiss to grow at elevations lower than they normally would.
