Votive statue of the Holy Trinity, Baroque plague column in Tvrđa, Croatia
The Votive statue of the Holy Trinity is a baroque stone monument on a tall pedestal featuring five statues of saints, with sculptural representations of God, Christ, and a dove at its crown. The structure occupies the center of Holy Trinity Square and serves as a natural focal point within the fortified district.
Baroness Marija Ana Petraš funded its construction between 1729 and 1730 during a period of frequent plague outbreaks in Slavonia. The monument underwent later restoration work as religious structures of this type were renewed across the region.
The monument displays five Latin inscriptions with chronograms marking important dates in its creation and restoration. These texts reflect the religious devotion and faith that shaped the community during this period.
The monument stands on Holy Trinity Square and serves as a central landmark in the fortified district, easily accessible from Osijek's main transportation routes. Visitors can walk around it from all sides to view the sculptural details from different angles.
Four additional saint statues, including Saint Joseph and Holy Mary, were moved from Osijek's city gates to the monument's perimeter in 1784. This relocation shows how religious sculptures were rearranged over time to enhance the site's importance.
