Church of Saint Michael, Baroque Catholic church in Tvrđa district, Osijek, Croatia
The Church of Saint Michael is a two-tower baroque structure with seven altars and ornate interior decoration located in Osijek's Tvrđa fortress district. The facade displays typical baroque features while the interior is filled with decorative details and religious artwork.
Construction began in 1725 on the site of a former Ottoman mosque, with the first service held in 1734. The building was completed in 1768, establishing its baroque form during a period of Christian recovery in the region.
The church takes its name from the Archangel Michael, a central figure in the religious art and decoration throughout the building. Worshippers gather at multiple altars dedicated to different saints, each contributing to the spiritual character of the interior.
The church remains an active place of worship with regular services throughout the week. Visitors should plan to arrive during non-service times to explore freely and show respect for those worshipping.
The building sustained damage during the 1991 conflict but underwent complete restoration in 1999 to recover its original appearance. This restoration effort preserved the baroque details that had survived the damage, returning the church to its earlier condition.
