Castra Mursa

Castra Mursa was a Roman military camp along the Drava River that contained stone walls, barracks, granaries, and defensive structures. These buildings were designed to protect against northern invasions and to monitor river traffic.

Emperor Trajan founded this military outpost in the first century AD as part of the border defense along the Danube. The garrison became a key point in Rome's control of the Pannonian frontier.

Artifacts found at the site such as pottery and tools show how Roman soldiers lived and worked in this distant outpost. These discoveries help modern visitors understand what daily life was like here.

The remains lie beneath modern Osijek, with certain foundations and wall sections visible through archaeological excavations. Joining a guided tour helps to better understand the layout and history of the site.
