Mljet Nacionalni Park, National park in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, Croatia
Mljet Nacionalni Park is a national park occupying the western portion of Mljet island in southern Croatia. The protected zone covers forested slopes, two connected saltwater basins known as lakes, and coastal caves carved into limestone cliffs.
The park was founded in 1960 to protect the natural environment of the southern Adriatic coast. Since then, the authority has managed the forests and the lake system to prevent overdevelopment and preserve the local ecosystems.
The 12th-century Benedictine monastery complex situated on an islet within the Great Lake represents centuries of religious presence in this Mediterranean setting.
Marked walking paths link the main points of interest within the park and are easy to follow on foot. Boat services operate between the two lakes, making it simple to move from one area to another without long detours.
Both lakes connect to the open sea through narrow channels and experience tidal shifts. Water temperature changes with depth, creating separate zones where different marine life thrives at various levels.
