Castle of Egervár, Medieval castle in Egervár, Hungary
The Castle of Egervár is a medieval fortress in the small town of Egervár, in western Hungary, built around a square plan with stone walls, towers, and defensive structures. The complex has a residential tower, underground cellars, and several exhibition rooms that reflect different building phases across the centuries.
The castle was founded in the Middle Ages and reached its greatest strategic role in the 16th century, when it formed part of the regional defense against Ottoman incursions. It was rebuilt and expanded several times over the following centuries, and each phase left visible traces in the current stonework.
The castle hosts exhibitions with objects from local history and everyday life in the region, spread across several rooms that visitors can walk through at their own pace. The displays give a concrete sense of how people in this part of Hungary lived and worked in earlier centuries.
Comfortable shoes are a good idea since the paths around the site can be uneven. The underground sections are worth visiting carefully, as they give the clearest sense of how the defensive layout of the complex worked.
The residential tower in the northwestern corner of the castle dates from the 14th century, making it the oldest surviving part of the whole complex. This tower shows Gothic and Renaissance elements side by side, which reveals how the castle was gradually reshaped over several centuries without fully erasing its earlier layers.
