Synagogue Zalaegerszeg, Moorish Revival synagogue in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary

Synagogue Zalaegerszeg is a large Byzantine-eclectic building with two towers, built from April 1903 to September 1904 to plans by József Stern using Romanesque and Eastern elements. Inside, 226 seats for men and a gallery with 152 seats for women were arranged, and the walls were decorated with coloured paintings and stucco. It has served as the City Concert and Exhibition Hall since 1983.

The synagogue was built between April 1903 and September 1904 to designs by József Stern, who used Romanesque and Oriental elements. It had 226 seats for men and 152 for women in the gallery, and its organ was made by Angster József. After World War II, the building was no longer used for worship; it served as a warehouse until 1960, when the Jewish association sold it to the city council for 400,000 forints. Renovated by Gyula Pelényi, it reopened in 1983 as a concert and exhibition hall.

Since 1983 the former synagogue has served as the City Concert and Exhibition Hall, hosting concerts, lectures, conferences and weddings. A permanent exhibition opened in 2014 presents the history of Zalaegerszeg's Jewish community, and ritual objects from the Hungarian Jewish Museum and the local congregation are displayed.

The building no longer serves as a synagogue: since September 1983 it has operated as the City Concert and Exhibition Hall, open to the public for exhibitions, concerts, lectures, conferences and weddings. A permanent exhibition on the history of the local Jewish community opened there in 2014. Visitors should check the current programme before planning a visit.

The building's two towers made it stand out far beyond its surroundings when it was completed in 1904, and it soon became one of the city's sights. Its original organ, built by the Angster József organ workshop, was moved to the Mária Magdolna Parish Church in Zalaegerszeg; the current three-manual concert organ was made by the Aquincum organ works in 1987.
