Massif de Zala, Hill region in Zala County, Hungary
The Massif de Zala is a hill region in southwestern Hungary, within Zala County, with gentle slopes and a high point of about 338 meters. The landscape alternates between farmland, woodland, and small valleys that run through the area.
The area was settled during the early Magyar period and became a farming center in western Hungary. The village pattern established at that time is still visible in many parts of the region today.
The slopes of the massif have been covered with vineyards for generations, and winemaking remains part of everyday life in the villages of the area. On many hillsides, visitors can see rows of old vines tended by small local producers.
Walking trails connect the villages across the hills and pass through both woodland and open farmland. Visitors should be ready for changing weather, as the open terrain offers little shelter along the way.
Layers of limestone and dolomite beneath the hills have slowly shaped a network of caves and underground spaces over time. Some of these spaces shelter plant and animal species that are not found anywhere else in the region.
