Nyirkai-Hany, Protected wetland in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Hungary.
Nyirkai-Hany is a protected wetland with over 400 hectares of reed beds, bulrush stands, and open water surfaces within the Fertő-Hanság National Park region. The landscape consists of several shallow basins and channels surrounded by dense reed thickets that provide space for various waterbird species.
The area was transformed from intensive agricultural use to its current natural state in the early 2000s. A major restoration project with Dutch support reestablished water levels and allowed reed vegetation and animal populations to return.
The reed beds draw bird watchers who experience the natural dynamics of wetland ecosystems firsthand. Visitors see how aquatic plants shape habitat for diverse animal life and how this place has become part of local conservation awareness.
Visitors can observe waterfowl from designated observation points around the site, especially diving ducks and coots. The best time to visit is autumn and winter when migratory bird species are present in large numbers.
In winter over 20,000 migratory birds use this site as a critical stopover point, including substantial populations of greater white-fronted geese and greylag geese. This concentration of arctic geese is remarkable in Europe and attracts bird watchers from far away.
