Sorake

Sorake is a surfing beach in Teluk Dalam on Nias Island, known for its large, well-formed waves that are strongest from May to September. The coast stretches along a bay with rocky sections and sandy areas, where different spots offer varying conditions for different skill levels.

The area was long a fishing and trading region for local communities before it became known as a surfing destination. It gained international attention in the second half of the 20th century when surfers discovered the exceptional waves.

Local residents gather at the beach for everyday tasks, and you can watch craftspeople working in simple workshops near the shore. These activities show how people here have adapted their daily routines to life alongside the ocean.

The best time to surf is from May to September when waves are large and consistent, so plan your visit during these months. The beach is reached by local boats or small planes from the mainland or other islands, and basic accommodations and restaurants are available nearby.

Multiple reef sections create different wave types at various positions along the beach, attracting both experienced and beginner surfers. Each area has its own character and difficulty level, allowing surfers to encounter different challenges during a single session.
