Lough Rynn Castle, 19th century castle estate and hotel in County Leitrim, Ireland
Lough Rynn Castle is a 19th century castle located on expansive grounds along the shores of Lough Rynn in County Leitrim. The building now contains 44 bedrooms, surrounded by walled gardens and crisscrossed by walking trails that extend throughout the estate.
The estate originally belonged to the Mac Raghnaill family until 1621 when it was taken over during the English Plantation. The Clements family acquired it in 1750 and reshaped the grounds according to their vision.
The castle preserves architectural elements from different periods within its Baronial Hall, which features high ceilings and heavy wooden beams. The expansive gardens surrounding it demonstrate design patterns typical of Irish estates that visitors can walk through today.
The property now functions as a luxury hotel and conference venue accommodating up to 300 guests. Visitors should allow time to explore different areas of the grounds, including dining facilities and the walled gardens at their own pace.
Near the castle grounds stands Cloch an Draoi, a Bronze Age burial site that offers glimpses into the region's distant past. An ancient crannóg, an artificial island dwelling, also remains visible in Lough Rynn and reveals how people once lived on water.
