Larchill, Ornamental farm garden in Phepotstown, Ireland
Larchill is an ornamental farm garden with eight acres of decorative lake featuring two islands, each with a folly structure and a Bacchus statue. The restored walled garden contains herb sections, vegetable plots, flower borders, and several water features alongside historic buildings.
Robert Prentice, a Quaker businessman, founded the estate in 1708 as a country residence supporting flax production on the land. Later changes transformed it into a pleasure garden combining agriculture with ornamental design.
The garden reveals 18th-century European design thinking through its tree-lined walks and water features arranged to guide visitors through different scenes and moods.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with well-maintained paths connecting different sections of the garden and lake. Wear appropriate footwear, especially after rain, as grass areas and paths can become wet and slippery.
The Cockle Tower is a three-level circular structure built from limestone rubble with pointed arch openings, surprisingly elaborate for what appears to be a simple garden feature. This building shows how the owners took their ornamental ambitions seriously even in smaller architectural elements.
