Summerhill House

Summerhill House was a large manor with 100 rooms whose symmetrical design with two wings and a central block reflected Palladian ideals. Its pale stone facade, curved chimneys, and generous windows displayed the craftsmanship of the period.

The house was designed in 1731 by two prominent architects and served as a family residence until the Irish conflict of the early 20th century. Its destruction in 1921 ended its role as a major Irish estate.

The house was a center of aristocratic rural life in Ireland and attracted visitors from across Europe who valued its refined interiors and the social gatherings hosted there.

The location in the middle of the countryside is easily reached by road and sits in an open, agricultural setting. Visitors should expect to find only the remains of the original building rather than a restored structure.

The Austrian Empress used the estate multiple times as a hunting lodge, underscoring its importance in European high society. This connection to Europe's royal houses was notable for its time and is often overlooked today.
