Kilree, Christian monastery in County Kilkenny, Ireland.
Kilree is a monastery in County Kilkenny featuring a round tower rising about 26 meters high within a walled cemetery. The tower has seven windows and an entrance doorway positioned two meters above ground level.
The site was founded in the sixth century by Saint Rhuidche, whose name gave rise to Kilree. The monastic community relocated to Kells Priory in 1340.
The high cross here displays detailed sandstone carvings with hunting scenes and religious figures that reveal the craftsmanship of medieval artisans.
The monastic site sits about two kilometers south of Kells village, reached via a side road from the R697. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven in places.
Local tradition suggests that Niall Caille, a High King of Ireland who drowned in 846, may rest beneath the decorated high cross. This possible connection between the monument and an ancient ruler intrigues visitors interested in Irish history.
