Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Contemporary art gallery at University College Cork, Ireland
The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is a contemporary art museum on the grounds of University College Cork, housed in a building designed by O'Donnell + Tuomey architects and made largely of wood and glass. Three floors of exhibition space allow for a wide range of formats, from paintings and sculptures to large installations.
The gallery opened in October 2004, when President Mary McAleese inaugurated the building on the University College Cork campus. It was made possible by a private donation that funded the construction of a purpose-built space for contemporary art in the region.
The gallery takes its name from Lewis Glucksman, an American financier whose donation made the building possible. Exhibitions here often connect art to social questions that are visible and relevant to everyday life.
The gallery sits at the main entrance of the University College Cork campus and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Entry is free, and the space is open on weekdays and Saturday mornings.
The building won the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2004, one of the most recognized architecture awards in Britain and Ireland. This means a visit here is as much about the structure itself as about the art inside.
