South-West Region, Ireland, Statistical region in South-West Ireland
The South-West Region is an area in south-west Ireland covering Cork and Kerry and making up roughly one-sixth of the country. The region combines coastal cities, rolling valleys, and mountain ranges into one connected landscape.
The area operated under its own regional authority until 2014, when administrative reforms created new governance structures. This shift brought different ways of managing the region's affairs.
In areas like Dingle, Cape Clear Island, and Muskerry, people speak Irish as their everyday language rather than English. These language communities keep a centuries-old tradition alive that you can encounter during your visit.
Two international airports in Cork and Kerry connect the region to the world, while ferry services also link to the United Kingdom and France. Most major towns are easily reached by car or rail.
The area marks both Ireland's southernmost point and its westernmost location, placing it geographically between two extremes. The country's highest mountains are also found within this region.
