Priest's Leap

Priest's Leap is a mountain pass and hiking trail linking County Kerry with County Cork through remote valleys where sheep roam freely. The route climbs to 463 meters and spans about 7.3 kilometers along narrow country roads.

The name comes from a legend about a priest who escaped soldiers pursuing him by making a daring horseback jump across a canyon, leaving marks in nearby rocks. This story reflects the area's significance during times of religious tension.

The burial ground near the trail displays ancient headstones with unusual carvings of crucifixion scenes that show the region's deep religious traditions. These stones reveal how faith has always been woven into daily life in this remote area.

The trail is demanding and requires sturdy footwear and stamina, especially given the steep climb and narrow paths. Visitors should allow plenty of time and exercise caution during poor weather since loose gravel can become slippery.

This location marks the highest road in Munster province, and the narrow paths and surroundings still bear the mark of traditional shepherds who have used this pass for generations. The old ways of sheep herding and rural life remain visible here.
