Cloonee and Inchiquin Loughs, Uragh Wood

Cloonee and Inchiquin Loughs is a protected area in County Kerry containing two freshwater lakes bordered by native hardwood forests. The site spans roughly 115 hectares and encompasses diverse woodland habitats with oak, birch, and other natural tree species throughout.

The area was designated as a Special Area of Conservation in 1982 to protect its woodland and lake ecosystems from damage. This protection measure formed part of Ireland's broader environmental safeguarding efforts for such habitats.

The lakes and woodlands maintain strong connections to Irish environmental preservation efforts, supporting research programs focused on local species protection.

Visitors can walk designated trails through Uragh Wood with parking available near the main entrance to the conservation area. The paths allow people to explore the woodland and lakes in different ways depending on their interests and fitness levels.

The location supports the Kerry slug and lesser horseshoe bat, two uncommon species rarely encountered elsewhere in Ireland. These animals depend on the undisturbed woodland and lake conditions to survive and thrive.
