Hungry Hill, Mountain summit in Beara Peninsula, Ireland
Hungry Hill is the highest peak of the Caha Mountains at 685 meters, with steep eastern slopes and rocky ridges defining its rugged terrain. The mountain features open moorland and scattered rocks across varied elevations throughout the climb.
The mountain formed from purple and green sandstone layers of the Caha Mountain Formation dating back around 250 million years. These ancient rock strata create the rugged structures visible to hikers on the slopes today.
English author Daphne du Maurier selected Hungry Hill as the setting and title for her 1943 novel about a mining family's generational story.
The summit trail requires about 7 to 8 hours to complete the 13-kilometer route and demands mountain navigation experience. Favorable weather conditions are essential for safely hiking this demanding path.
At the base of the mountain stands the Mare's Tail waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls across the British Isles. This natural wonder creates a dramatic water display at the foot of the peak.
