Uragh Wood, Protected oak forest in County Kerry, Ireland

Uragh Wood is an 87-hectare sessile oak wood in Tuosist, County Kerry, Ireland, designated a nature reserve in 1982 and owned by the state. It lies beside Inchiquin Lough and forms part of the 1,154-hectare Cloonee and Inchiquin Loughs, Uragh Wood Special Area of Conservation.

Uragh Wood was designated a nature reserve in 1982 and is owned by the Irish state. Since Ireland adopted the EU Habitats Directive, the wood has formed part of the 1,154-hectare Cloonee and Inchiquin Loughs, Uragh Wood Special Area of Conservation, with Inchiquin being the lake beside the wood.

The wood lies beside Inchiquin Lough, and since Ireland adopted the EU Habitats Directive it has formed part of the 1,154-hectare Cloonee and Inchiquin Loughs, Uragh Wood Special Area of Conservation. Its Irish name, Tearmann Dúlra Choill na hIúraí, is the name to look for on Irish-language maps and signage.

Uragh Wood has no public access, so it cannot be entered at any time of year. The 87-hectare woodland is owned by the state and lies in Tuosist, County Kerry, beside Inchiquin Lough. Views of the sessile oak canopy are possible only from outside the reserve boundary.

The wood is internationally important for its suite of hyper-oceanic woodland bryophytes, mosses and liverworts that depend on constant damp. The Kerry slug, listed in Annexes II and IV of the EU Habitats Directive, also lives here, alongside the lesser horseshoe bat, listed in Annex II.
