Uragh Wood

Uragh Wood is a protected oak forest reserve covering approximately 87 hectares along Inchquin Lough. The woodland features native sessile oak trees mixed with birch, willow, and aspen throughout.

The woodland was designated as a protected reserve in 1982 to preserve one of Ireland's remaining ancient oak forests. This protection came after similar woodlands in the region had been significantly reduced.

The woodland is part of a broader protected area that encompasses several lakes and preserves the region's natural diversity. Visitors can observe how the forest connects with the surrounding water landscape, shaping the local ecosystem.

The nature reserve has restricted public access throughout the year to protect sensitive ecosystems and endangered species. It is best to check current access conditions and any available guided tours before planning a visit.

The reserve is home to rare species such as the Kerry Slug and Lesser Horseshoe Bat, both protected under European law. These specialized creatures thrive in the undisturbed forest habitat, making the site exceptionally valuable for European biodiversity.
