Waterford Barracks, Military barracks in Waterford, Ireland
Waterford Barracks was a military compound in Waterford that occupied two separate sections: infantry quarters lay to the north and artillery facilities to the south of Barrack Street. The two areas served different operational purposes within a single installation.
The British War Office established this military installation in 1799 as a strategic post in Ireland. The compound remained under British control until Ireland gained independence in 1922.
The facility represented British military presence in Ireland, with different regiments including the 5th Royal Irish Lancers occupying the grounds over time.
The site was gradually dismantled after 1922, with the southern section demolished in the 1930s to make way for what is now St. Carthage's Avenue. Little remains of the northern infantry section, as the structures fell into disrepair over time.
During World War I, the artillery section served as a depot for multiple cavalry regiments, marking a shift from its original purpose.
