Mallow Castle, National monument in Mallow, Ireland
The rectangular fortified structure features polygonal turrets at its corners and extends across 33 acres of land overlooking the River Blackwater.
The original castle from 1185 belonged to King John, later passing to the Earls of Desmond before Elizabeth I granted it to Sir Thomas Norrey.
The estate contains three distinct buildings representing different architectural periods: a 13th-century castle, a 16th-century fortified house, and a 19th-century mansion.
The castle grounds, managed by Cork County Council since 2011, include gardens and parkland accessible from the N72 on Bridewell Lane.
The castle features defensive musket loops in its walls and stepped battlements that provided soldiers with a complete field of fire around the structure.
