The Killavullen Caves feature multiple chambers and passages within limestone formations, revealing natural geological structures through their connected underground network.
Archaeological excavations in 1934 uncovered significant paleontological findings, including remains of Irish Elk, brown bear, wolf, and reindeer in the cave system.
Records from the early 19th century indicate that one section of the caves served as a dwelling for the village blacksmith, whose forge provided illumination.
The caves remained open to visitors until the early 1990s when steel doors were installed to restrict access and protect the site from potential damage.
Multiple entrances lead into the cave system, which contains geological formations developed through natural erosion processes spanning thousands of years.
