Castle Oliver, Victorian castle in County Limerick, Ireland.
Castle Oliver is a red sandstone castle in Scottish Baronial style in County Limerick, Ireland, featuring turrets, decorative gables, and angled bay windows. The building contains numerous bedrooms and bathrooms, several reception rooms with original Victorian fittings, and is surrounded by gardens and terraced grounds.
The castle was built in 1845 on the site of an older fortified house that had previously stood there. The commission came from two sisters, Mary Isabella and Elizabeth Oliver Gascoigne, who inherited the estate from their father Richard Oliver.
The hand-painted ceilings and heraldic windows inside date from the original construction and were commissioned by the family who built the house. Visitors who look closely at the stained glass can make out the family symbols worked into each panel.
The property is available to hire for group stays and events, and it sits on elevated ground overlooking the Ballyhoura Mountains. Visitors should set aside plenty of time, as both the interior rooms and the surrounding gardens and terraces take a while to explore properly.
Beneath the building lies one of Ireland's largest private wine cellars, reached by a spiral staircase that leads deep below the main floors. The cellar holds space for around 55,000 bottles and is a part of the property that most visitors never get to see.
