Wohl Rose Park, Rose garden near Parliament, Jerusalem, Israel.
Wohl Rose Park is a public rose garden in Jerusalem, situated close to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, with pathways, benches, and a central water feature. The roses are arranged in separate sections by country of origin, each labeled with signs describing the variety.
The garden was laid out in 1981 on land adjacent to the government district. During construction, workers uncovered ancient Jewish burial sites and floor mosaics from the Byzantine period, showing that the site had been used for centuries before.
The park sits next to the Knesset, Israel's parliament, and many visitors walk through it before or after visiting the nearby national institutions. The sections organized by country give the space a feeling that goes beyond a typical city park.
The garden is easy to walk through, with clear paths and plenty of benches along the way. A visit in spring, when most roses are in bloom, gives the best sense of how the different sections look.
In 2003, the park was ranked among the world's finest at an international rose competition, an honor rarely given to a freely accessible public garden in a city center. The Byzantine mosaics found during construction are preserved and can be seen on site.
