St. Simon's Monastery, Monastic complex in Mokattam Mountain, Cairo, Egypt
The monastery contains three cave churches carved within the Mokattam cliffs, featuring a central pulpit that accommodates 2,000 worshippers at once.
The monastery emerged in 1975 when the Zabbaleen community, relocated by Cairo authorities to a single settlement, constructed their first Christian church.
The Coptic Christian Zabbaleen community maintains the monastery while operating an extensive recycling operation throughout the surrounding neighborhood.
Visitors reach the monastery through the Zabbaleen district, with local residents providing directions as navigation applications may not show accurate routes.
The walls and mountain rocks display detailed carvings depicting religious narratives alongside sculptures of Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene.
