Bijapur Airport, Proposed airport in Madabhavi, India
Bijapur Airport is a proposed airport in Madabhavi, a locality in the state of Karnataka, India, currently under construction. The plan includes a terminal building, a runway, taxiways, hangars, and a control tower.
The project began in January 2010 with an agreement between the Karnataka state government and MARG Limited. It was set up as a public-private partnership to bring air travel to a part of the country with limited connectivity.
The terminal building draws from the temple architecture of Hampi, a nearby site of great historical depth, making the design immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with the region. Stone-like motifs and carved decorative patterns echo the style of structures built centuries ago in Karnataka.
The site is not open to the public as construction is still ongoing, so a visit is not possible at this stage. It is worth checking with local authorities for updates on the project before making any travel plans that depend on this airport.
The project covers roughly 294 hectares (about 727 acres), making it one of the larger airport developments in the Karnataka region. Despite the agreement signed in 2010, construction has faced long delays, making this one of the most drawn-out infrastructure projects in the area.
