Bara Kaman, 16th century mausoleum in Vijaypura District, India
Bara Kaman is a mausoleum in Vijaypura built with twelve unfinished stone arches arranged in perfect symmetry, forming a rectangular structure. The arches display intricate carvings and architectural details that reveal the ambitious design that was never completed.
Ali Adil Shah II commissioned this mausoleum in 1672 for his family, but construction stopped when he died. The planned dome that should have crowned the structure was never built.
The monument blends architectural traditions and shows the skill of craftsmen from the Deccan Sultanate era. You can see how different styles come together in every detail of the structure when you walk through it.
You can reach the monument easily from Vijaypura city center and visit it during daytime hours. Guided tours are available if you want to learn more about the architecture and history.
The name Bara Kaman means twelve arches and refers to the twelve stone vaults that were supposed to support what would have been one of the largest domes in the Deccan region. This unfinished ambition makes it a rare example of a structure that never achieved its intended grandeur.
